The Virtual Photographer

From things my mother taught me.

In high school, I bought a book on photography and became fascinated. Besides the glamour of walking about with a camera, I was also fascinated by the science of it.

In those days, the photographer was responsible for setting the aperture. focal length, lighting. The physics and chemistry of it were enticing. My mom was not too keen, however, about letting me build a darkroom in the basement.

When it came time to fill out college applications, I wanted to put “photography” as a hobby because I was interested in it. My mother was adamant and forbade it, since I wasn’t “really” a photographer. This is the lesson I learned from it.

There is a huge difference between a photographer and someone who only read a book about being a photographer.
