Christmas and the Winter Solstice

In ‘Roma e il natale solare nella tradizione nordico-aria’ (La Difesa della razza, 1940), Evola writes:

Very few suspect that the holidays [i.e., Catholic holy days] of today, in the century of skyscrapers, radio, great movements of the masses, are celebrated and continue … a remote tradition, bringing us back to the times when, almost at the dawn of humanity, the rising motion of the first Aryan civilisation began; a tradition, in which, moreover, the great voice of those men is expressed rather than a particular belief.

A fact unknown to most must be first of all remembered, viz., that in its origins the date of Christmas and that of the beginning of the new year coincided, this date not being arbitrary, but connected to a precise cosmic event, namely, the Winter Solstice. The Winter Solstice falls in fact on December 25, which is the date of Christmas, subsequently known, but which in its origins had an essentially solar significance. That appears also in ancient Rome: the date of Christmas in ancient Rome was that of the rising of the Sun, the unconquered God, Natalis solis invicti. With that, as the day of the new sun — dies solis novi — in the imperial epoch brought the beginning of the new year, the new cycle. But this “solar birth” of Rome in the imperial period, in its turn, referred to a somewhat more remote tradition of Nordic-Aryan origin. Of the reset, Sol, the solar divinity, appeared already among the dii indigetes, that is, among the divinities of Roman origin, passed on from even more distant cycles of civilisation. In reality, the solar religion of the imperial period, in a large measure had the meaning of a recovery and almost of a rebirth, unfortunately altered by various factors of decomposition, of a very old Aryan heritage.

First of all, let us clear up a misconception of the date December 25, which some have believed represents an error on Evola’s part. Julius Caesar, in his calendar reform of 46 BC, did indeed set the date for the Winter Solstice on December 25. Over the centuries, the subtle error in the length of the Julian year gradually moved the astronomical date backwards. When Pope Gregory reformed the Julian calendar, he began with a later year, corresponding to a Church council, rather than the original year of 46 BC. Thus, the Winter Solstice moved back to around December 21 instead of the original December 25. Thus, Evola was correct in his claim that the data of Christmas was set to coincide with the Winter Solstice.

In the article, Evola goes on to tie in the date with the birth of Mithras. He also points out that in ancient Rome, the “day of the sun” was also the “Lord’s day”, another tradition adopted by the Christians. He also ties this symbolism of the light with the prologue to John’s Gospel.

The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world

Evola concludes the article

In the Aryan and Nordic tradition and in Rome itself, the same theme had an importance not only religious and mystical, but sacred, heroic and cosmic at the same time. It was the tradition of a people, to whom the same nature, the same great voice, which I wrote about , at that date, a tradition of a mystery of resurrection, of the birth or rebirth of a beginning not only of “light” and new life, but also of Imperium, in the highest and most august meaning of the word.

  1. Hail Earendel, brightest of angels, over middle-yard to men sent, and true radiance of the Sun bright above the stars, every season thou of thyself ever illuminest.

Et iam Mygdoniis elata cubilibus alto

  2. I agree, Cologero. Obviously, this was written for a different context to be read by a different audience. I am not attempting to refute Evola, since i agree with him, and even though I do not believe that Christmas is based on the solstice, I also believe it is not arbitrary and the feast occurs where it does for a reason. I do not think it is coincidence that all of these events occur in December, either. I shared this primarily to give some factual background to parallel the post, rather than compete with it.

  3. With all due respect, Perennial, you should be seeing mysteries everywhere; this is hardly the equivalent of a birth announcement in the NY Times. Please review your rosary.
Unfortunately, you are adopting the methods of “scientific” history, so praised in the documents of Vatican II, but whose effects have been quite corrosive. Expresssions such as “there is no evidence” or “there is no reason to believe” are far from establishing anything concrete.

The second mistake you make is thinking Gornahoor is like any other forums you may frequent. You may want to refute Saturnalia all you want, but I don’t believe that was even mentioned in the post nor in Evola’s text.

I suggest you read the chapter “The Limits of History and Geography” from “The Reign of Quantity” and try to rewrite your comment in its light.

Evola’s, and Guenon’s, point is that dates are not arbitrary. Pace, Evola, however, Christmas is not a decomposition, but rather a deepening and a recomposition. It renewed a decomposing Tradition, which we witness in the Middle Ages. It was such, also, that a poet like Virgil could anticipate the start of a new Golden Age.

  4. This is from a post I made on a debate on the date of Christmas in another forum I thought I would share: The feast of Sol Invictus began the week before, and as was common in the traditional world the feast lasted several days. The day of the unconquered sun overlapped with the 25th, but did not fall on it. In addition, the feast of Sol Invictus was not widely celebrated until about 200 years after Christ’s death, being popularised by Augustus Aurelian. In fact, it has been speculated that Sol Invictus was actually a rip-off of Christmas, and not the reverse. We know that the feast of Sol Invictus dates to no earlier than 274 AD at Rome. This was observed by Roman games every 4 years, evidenced by the surviving Chronology of 354, which lists the games as beginning on the 25th. However, Christmas, from ancient Martyologies, was already celebrated annually on the 25th in 336. In fact there is no reason to believe that Sol Invictus was observed December 25th prior to 354, a full 18 years after the Roman sacramentary records Christmas. In fact, scholars believe that August may have likely been the original month Sol was celebrated. Other works list solar game in October. Tertullian argued for December 25th being Christ’s birth back in 198 AD, 76 years before Sol Invictus was even observed by Aurelian, so clearly none of this was new. As for the other nonsense, such as Saturnalia and the like, Saturnalia occurred in earl December, nowhere near Christmas, and ended before the 25th. Clearly, there is little connection between pagan deities and the Feast of the Nativity. The Holy Father rightly observes that Christ’s birthday is dated 9 months after the Annunciation, when Our Lady conceived Our Lord. No mysteries here.

I’m not a writer, nor a journalist or whatever who regurgitates sources. Nor do antediluvian-spirits, nor the ancients, care for sources or authors (author-ity); but their only concern was veracity.

Chaos refers to the universal and usually malign spiritual force embodied by the malevolent entities comprised of psychic energy that live in the Abyss that is the opposite of Order. These entities are mostly daemons, but the term also encompasses those mortals who have thrown in their lot with Chaos, ranging from simple peasants and/or labourers who serve as Chaos Cultists to pseudo-royalty and pseudo-priesthood. Chaos is also itself the turbulent psychic energy that comprises the Abyss. Chaos is almost synonymous with the Abyss — the two concepts are inseparable, for Chaos is the limitless ocean of spiritual, psychic and emotional energy that defines the Abyss and underlies the 4-dimensional material universe of space-time.

“I’ve heard it said that the Mediterranean & Mideast worlds evolved a complex phenomenology of the mal occhio because they are more given to envy than we Notherners. But the Evil Eye is a universal concept, missing not in any space (such as the chill & rational North) but only in time — to be exact, in historical time, the time of cold Reason. Reason’s protection against magic is to disbelieve it, to believe it out of Reason’s universe of discourse. “Asia’s defense against magic is more magic ….
But Reason & Magic are both superstitions (“left-over beliefs”). I suggest that the mal occhio “works”; but my analysis is neither rational nor irrational. Who can explain the complex web of signs, symbols, forces & influences that flow & weave between such enigmatic monads as ourselves? We can’t explain how we communicate, much less what. If the “symbolic order” was replaced by “history”, & if History itself is somehow now in the process of “disappearing”, perhaps we may at last breathe free of the fogs of magic & the smogs of reason. Perhaps we can simply admit that “mysteries” such as the Eye — or even “telepathy” — somehow appear in our world, or seem to appear, which means simply that they appear to appear, & thus that they appear.

The proper organ for this kind of knowledge would be the body. …

Even the phallic amulet, which might at first appear all male, is not the penis of the animal-god, but of Priapus, a god of vegetation. It is the penis of fruit & flower — in some sense, a female penis.

The apotropaic complex is thus to be seen as neither male nor female nor even, properly speaking, androgynous. The symbols revolve not around gender but engendering, around life or energy itself as a value opposed to the negativity, the vacuum, the deathly cold of envy.

The opposite of the gaze of love is not the gaze of hate, but that of envy, passive, unliving in itself, vampirically attracted to the life in others. A barren woman sees a pretty newborn baby — she praises it to the skies, but her words mean the opposite of what they say; unknown even to her, her gaze pierces direct to the infant’s breath.

Blue is the color of the sky & its happiness, air & light against the earth & shadow of Envy. So the blue bead is homeopathic — a bit of evil used to defend against evil — perhaps a fragment fallen from the Horned One himself, powerful in its goaty virility against the chthonic negative-Yin- like power of Envy. And yet the stone is also the serenity of azure, turquoise, infinity, the Feminine — a bit of mosaic from the matrix of the sky, or of water.

The amulet we fashion against an entire society of the Evil Eye can be no more & no less than our own life, adamantine as stone & horn, soft as sky.”

  9. Since Hoo does not name sources, here is some background.
    Alexander Hislop
The Evola quotes are from Do We Live in a Gynaecocratic Society?
    Regarding Gregory VII: Evil Organizations

With all due respect, Hoo, a writer needs to add value to his material. You need to combine all this “research” into something coherent. What I can gather is that the Medieval Church secretly passed on an ancient matriarchal religion; this began either with Constantine or Gregory, depending on the source. The Protestants presumably rescued Northern Europe from this cult. But, no, they did a rather poor job of it, because, as Evola points out, Paris, London, and Berlin are worshipers of Aphrodite.

This is shown by their love of dogs. Imagine the West today, particularly the USA, where dogs are considered family members … not that I like dogs very much.

So, where is this all leading, Hoo?

“Dagon, the fish-god, represented that deity as a manifestation of the same patriarch who had lived so long in the waters of the deluge. As the Pope bears the key of Janus, so he wears the mitre of Dagon. The excavations of Nineveh have put this beyond all possibility of doubt. The Papal mitre is entirely different from the mitre of Aaron and the Jewish high priests. That mitre was a turban. The two-horned mitre, which the Pope wears, when he sits on the high altar at Rome and receives the adoration of the Cardinals, is the very mitre worn by Dagon, the fish-god of the Philistines and Babylonians. There were two ways in which Dagon was anciently represented. The one was when he was depicted as half-man half-fish; the upper part being entirely human, the under part ending in the tail of a fish. The other was, when, to use the words of Layard, “the head of the fish formed a mitre above that of the man, while its scaly, fan-like tail fell as a cloak behind, leaving the human limbs and feet exposed.” Of Dagon in this form Layard gives a representation in his last work; and no one who examines his mitre, and compares it with the Pope’s as given in Elliot’s Horoe, can doubt for a moment that from that, and no other source, has the pontifical mitre been derived. The gaping jaws of the fish surmounting the head of the man at Nineveh are the unmistakable counterpart of the horns of the Pope’s mitre at Rome.”

{we can see how the great Mediterranean civilization, thanks to the study of some female goddesses in the Roman religion, passes through the Black Sea, the Tigri and Eufrate valleys and stretches up to the Indus Valley (here she refers to the publications of G. Childe, 1935 and of E. Mackay, 1936): the foundings in Mohenjo Daro and Harappa reveal unheard links between the Anatolic-Aegean religious world and the Pre-Arian India and make us think of the Dravidians as a western origin population which, mixing with the primitive negroid population, was the vehicle of the Mediterranean civilization in the Gangeâ??s rivermouth and Ceylon.â??

    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YVbhq8MyHz4/Trmljfj59bI/AAAAAAAABZA/B5uQUrsDeow/s640/dagon+nimrod+pope+fish+001.jpg

    â??They were the Pelasgians, a dolicomorphus Mediterranean Pre-Indoeuropean people, who attested their presence since the Upper-Paleolitic westward and eastward the Aegeo-Anatolian areaâ?¦.In Italy, we can find traces of these early populations basically in the North with the Ligures and in the central-southern part (including Sardinia) with the Sicules. Probably they came from Africa, spreading eastward and westward…}

{Such are thus the fundamental features of the ‘Civilisation of the Mother’, characteristic, so to speak, of the pre-Aryan substratum of the ancient Mediterranean world. It was defeated by Apollonian, Dorian and Olympian Greece ; then, and even more completely, by ‘solar’ Rome, jealous guardian of the principle of paternal right and of the ideal of virile spirituality. However, since things are a process of constant renewal, the varieties of this ‘telluric’ culture manifest themselves again wherever a cycle ends, wherever the heroic tension and the constructive will vanish and decadent and debased forms of life and spirituality start to reappear.

    https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-cdCuece-n1c/TWwh8bYn4kI/AAAAAAAABE8/rcX6V2TNAx8/s640/Obelisk+magic+binding+power+001.jpg

Now, what is striking here is the correspondence of many aspects of contemporary civilisation to the civilisation of the Mother. In its external manifestations, this correspondence has already been noticed. “In the streets of Berlin, Paris or London,” as for instance A.Baeumler, a famous National-Socialist scholar, wrote, “all you have to do is to observe for a moment a man or a woman to realise that the cult of Aphrodite is the one before which Zeus and Apollo had to beat a retreat…The present age bears, in fact, all the features of a gynaecocratic age. In a late and decadent civilisation, new temples of Isis and Astarte, of these Asian mother goddesses that were celebrated in orgies and licentiousness, in desperate sinking into sensual pleasure, arise. The fascinating female is the idol of our times, and, with painted lips, she walks through the European cities as she once did through Babylon. And as if she wanted to confirm Bachofen’s profound intuition, the lightly dressed modern ruler of man keeps in leash a dog, the ancient symbol of unlimited sexual promiscuity and infernal forces”. But these analogies can be much further developed.

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RhVEXHyywoE/Tq9S6eUSEII/AAAAAAAABWk/rdqeiTSilKY/s640/Mr+%2526+Mrs+Babylon+001.jpg

    Modern times are ‘telluric’, not only in their mechanistic and materialistic aspects, but also, and essentially, in several of their ‘vitalist’ aspects, in their various religions of Life, of the Irrational and of Becoming, precise antitheses of any ‘classic’ and ‘Olympian’ conception of the world. To Keyserling, many of the currents of the so-called ‘world revolution’ reveal a ‘telluric’ nature – that is to say irrational, mainly related to forms of courage, self-sacrifice, fervour and dedication without transcendent reference. In many cases, he is right.}

  11. My research is leading me to think that the Project or Hoax of Modernity was begun deep in the church. Pagan in the following means sublunar, Chthonic or Tellurian (hellish).

” The pseudo-roman cult that rules the Vatican was first officially founded in 1057 by chief pagan high priest of the cult of Magna Mater (Cybele) known as Gregory VII.
The Cybele Cult has never been the legitimate leadership of the Catholic Church. However, through a relentless campaign to seize and consolidate its power, this relatively small band of individuals now controls the destiny of over one billion good, Christian and ethical Catholics, who remained tricked into believing the legitimacy of it as the Roman Cult.

A brutal and bloody cult — involving child sacrifice, burning people alive (since 11th Century CE), demonic worship and absolute celibacy of its lowest priests — its epicenter for such evil being the giant Phrygianum atop Vatican Hill since the 2nd Century BCE.”

“The first and most significant innovation of Gregory VII was to call upon the fiercely pagan families in Italy to pledge in out appearance to being Catholic.
The princely families of Italy had always known the Catholic Church was founded on a set of flimsy lies. But the military strength of the Catholic Empire was simply too strong. So instead of denying their lies, Hilderbrand convinced the princes to claim full belief in them as bonifide Catholics.
This was critical to the success of his plan. Hildebrand planned to no less than assume full legitimate inheritance of the Catholic Church as a Roman Rite by claiming the Roman Pontiffs were always Catholic and that the Liber Pontificalus was in terrible error.
Secondly, “Catholic” Pope Gregory VII instituted the second of his brilliant ideas — the office of Cardinal and the College of Cardinals. To reinforce his claim that the pseudo-romans were in fact the legitimate heirs of the Catholic religion (created less than 300 years earlier), he introduced the office of Cardinal whereby (as in ancient times), each family would be permitted to have no more than one of their family members as a Cardinal. Thereafter, the office of Pontifex Maximus would be elected from this select group.
Thirdly, Gregory VII formalized the process of land and title, ending centuries of bitter feuds between various princes by ensuring the process of noble title would be regulated through the College and the Pontiff known as the “Curia”. Thus the Cybele Cult and the base of their power was born.
Gregory further introduced innovations to reinforce the myth that the Latins had “always” been Catholic by introducing new forged texts such as the Dictatus papae — a compilation 27 axiomatic statements to claim not only that the Latins were always Catholic but to begin to indoctrinate the heretical demonic doctrine of Cybele into the liturgy of the Catholic Church.
Gregory went even further, ensuring that Cybele now became Mary, Mother of God –and technically superior to Jesus — as official “doctrine” of the Catholic Church. While this terrible heresy was against both Christian and Catholic doctrine, within two hundred years, it would actually become official Catholic doctrine under the control of the Roman cult.”

  12. Clearly a big day/night for the entire world and rest of the cosmos 🙂

  13. I was informed by a neighbor that last night was celebrated as Shab-e Yalda in Iran- which ostensibly represents the turning point -where darkness starts to give way to light- probably in connection with the birth of Mithra- the Sun god of ancient Persia. It’s a beautiful holiday in the line of other pre-Islamic Iranian celebrations such as Now-Ruz (1st day of Spring).

  14. Happy Hannukah! May the spiritual lights burn brighter than ever in these days of darkness. Cxx

  15. Thanks my plan, Charlotte.
